1 About Provincial Gender-related Development Index (GDI) study
Studies on Human Development and Gender Equality have been carried out in Vietnam for a few recent decades. Within the framework of the Program KX.05 "Culture, Human-being and Human Resources Development in Industrialization and Modernization" in the year 2002, 40 provinces have been helped collect data and undertake initial steps of HDI (Human Development Index) and GDI (Gender-related Development Index) calculation. At the end of 2004, some accomplished the first round of HDI calculation and conducted project appraisals, such as Ha Tinh, Ho Chi Minh City, Tien Giang, An Giang, Quang Ninh, Lam Dong and Ha Giang. Out of which, the three provinces, namely Ha Tinh, Ha Giang and Vinh Long, have finished figuring their GDI. Yet, it is emphasized that, at present, local development monitoring and assessment are just limited at general dimensions and there is a severe lack of gender specific statistics. One of the particular recommendations is that the State should issue regulation to integrate gender crieria into periodical statistic monitoring system as well as into other surveys conducted by various sectors and bodies.

1 Paco women's experience in collecting and using plants as non-wood forest products
This article is an analysis of non-wood forest product use from a gender perspective. Sex-based labor division of Paco ethnic group controls women's access to local non-wood forest products, which causes impact on thier experience in collecting and using plants for non-wood forest products. Out of 48 botanical species of non-wood forest products that Paco women collect and use, 33 are for food, 14 for drink, 11 for fire-wood, 8 for drugs and 6 for construction materials and livestock raising. Paco women's knowledge and experience have helped them effectively use various non-wood forest products, partially meeting the local need of food, medicine, construction and handicraft materials, fire-wood, etc. The article brings about some recommendations aimed at enhancing Paco women's role in poverty reduction and raising the local income on the basis of preserving and promoting their experience of non-wood forest products.

1 Women's participation in Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM) in Backan
The article introduces successes and lessons learned in (gender) integrated activities of the IPM on rice, corn, soybeans and vegetables in Backan over the past three years. In this program, women have accounted for 79 to 85 per cent of trainees in field training courses, and 71 per cent the membership of 25 IPM clubs. Given the program, 170 farmers have been trained to be new trainers, out of which women have accounted for 50 per cent. This is assumed to be significant for women in Backan province since most of them are of ethic minorities, such as Dao, Tay and Nung, who are often constrained from participating in up-to-date technical knowledge for better management in their production but also improved social relations between men and women, making contribution to raising women's stauts in family and community. There are also lessons learned in project management and recommendations from a gender perspective to promote the IPM's effectiveness and sustainability in Backan.
