6 Ethnic women in the Northern mountainous areas: Marriage, culture, and health care
The article, which bases on a study carried out in two noethern mountainous provinces of Lao Cai and Lang Son in 2005, examines some features of position of ethnic minority women in the fields of marriage, education, and health care in the context of market mechanism. It is found that despite some improvements, poor awareness of women's rights is main reason for lowering women's position in family and society. There are few improvements in roles and position of women of ethnic minority groups in the fields of marriage, education and health care, according to the study.

Within framework of the component of "support to Brackish Water and Marine Aquaculture" (SUMA), many training programmes to enhance capacity of local people were organised in four provinces of Quang Ninh, Nghe An, Khanh Hoa, and Ca Mau in four recent years. However, number of women participating in such capacity enhancement activities was project assessment study was conducted in four provinces at the earlier 2005. Study found that there are many reasons for the limitation of women participation in the training programmes, such as, traditional concept of role, prejudice of women capacity, and difference in opportunity to access techniques between men and women. Also, there is evidence that women could do well if they have opportunities to participate in the training programmes. Thus, it is well advised that efforts should be made to have training organisation and implementation changed to attract more women to participate in training programmes. In addition, community development plans and programmes should be designed in a way that gender relation should be seriously considered in terms of differences in customs, culture, and living conditions of people in each area.
6 Women in families with addicts
The article is to provide results of a qualitative study which examines disadvantages of women whose husband and/or children are addicts and finds out strategies women used to surmount difficulties. Attention was paid to economic, healt, and psychological aspects. It is concluded that economic burden, spiritual suffering, and poor health are heavy consequences those women are suffering. The majority of those underprivileged women have accepted their fate resignedly and responded negatively to failure in helping their relatives stop using drugs.
