According to the results of social surveys in the innovation period, there have been new internal conflicts. These internal conflicts are a result of the market economy environment and include land disputes, land encroachment in housing construction, unfair inheritance division and conflicts in spousal relationship due to factors such as economic inequality and new lifestyles. In such a social situation, the solution to these conflicts is initially through conciliation followed by legal action if conciliation fails.

Indigenous knowledge and the Tay people's abundant source of rice gene in Da Bac district, Hoa Binh province

The authors, in the area of tribal botany, conducted research on the abundance of rice varieties, types of cultivation and ways of using local rice varieties of the Tay people in Da Bac district, Hoa Binh province. The result shows that the local rice gene is present in abundance and is still preserved by people. The article also presents some recommendations to preserve this precious source of gene.

Through surveying Vietnamese villages' land registration in the Northern Delta, the author discovered that land registration is a source of information which stes up a complete and precise list of administrative units. This informs us of the size of villages and communes, the amount of land privatization, and the religions and beliefs present in the area. The author suggests that land registration is particularly valuable in research into traditional Vietnamese villages. Each land registration is a vivid description of a specific village. Research on land registration gives a full the picture of village practices and belief systems. This reference enables us to fully picture the traditional Vietnamese villages in Northern Delta. The picture of Vietnamese traditional rural area will be restored.

The article talks about several major concepts in ethnology and cultural-socio anthropology. Through the development of the history of ethnology and cultural-socio anthropology and its branches, subjects and contexts and major measures of approach, we are beginning to learn about the similatities and differences among countries which are influenced by German and Austrian ethnology and anthropology and British and American anthropology. Finally, the article mentions the directions of Vietnamese's ethnology development, and has some recommendations for the development now and in the future.

The coastal area of Hau Loc district, Thanh Hoa province has a community acosely related to the sea. The main economic activities of the 6 communes' inhabitants are fishing and processing and exchanging sea products. All the villages and communes in the area settlements of many lineages and these lineages have many branches. The long history and complexity of inhabitant sectors are shown through a great number of lineages which is an outstanding feature of this area.

The medical plant resource and poverty reduction among ethnic communities in the Northern mountainous area

In Vietnam there are nearly 4000 types of medicinal plants, which are found mostly in mountainous areas. These medical plants are potentially economically and culturally valuable. They are used by ethnic communities to treat diseases and are sold. The author documents that the appropriate development of medical plant resources needs, beside biological technique, an understanding of the properties of the particular plant. He argues that this process should be related to the community, should take account of community needs and involve local people as well as professionals interested in developing this resource.

After 3 years of adopting the policy of entry without examination(2000-2003), although there are still drawbacks with implementation, this policy has contributed to strengthening the development of education and training and the provision of qualified staff for ethnic minority and mountainous groups. This is a powerful force for the stable and comprehensive development of mountainous areas, the resolution of ethnic minority's current difficulties, and a contribution to the implementation of the Party and Government's policy towards ethnic problems.

Traditional wedding of Tay people in Trung Khanh district, Cao Bang province

Trung Khanh district in Cao Bang province is one of the Tay people's place of origin. Tay weddings are a manifestation of the people's culture. The rituals in a wedding are closely related to traditional cultural activities. The article describes 12 steps of rituals in a traditional wedding of Tay people in this area. These consists of engagement, marriage offering, wedding preparation, wedding day, bride welcome, the bow of the bridegroom to the ancestors (at the girl's house), the bridegroom inviting guests to drink wine, a party between repsentatives from the boy and the girl's families, the girl stepping out of the door her husband's house, the bride's welcome to her new home and the newly wed's first visit to the bride's family.
