11 WTO accession - opportunities and challenges for Vietnam's fisheries sector
Fisheries is a sector of great important in the global economy and particularly Vietnam's economy. Taking advantages of its development potentials, being proactive in gaining access to markets, and renovating management and production, the fisheries sector has obtained the significant achievements. The fisheries export value is expected to reach $3 billion by the end of 2006. In the current context of increasing global integration, especially when Vietnam becomes a WTO member, the fisheries sector will have more opportunities to further penetrate in the world markets by enjoying more tariff preference and less non-tariff barriers. However, the sector has to face some difficulties in complying with the WTO regulations and requirements of other WTO member countries. They include inadequate technology and management capacity; lack of investment in fisheries infrastructure; food safety and hygiene assurance issues; limited export promotion activities; and potential trade disputes over technical barriers. With such difficulties, the fisheries sector should seize opportunities and take measures to overcome the challenges in order to raise the competitiveness of the fisheries, and develop them in a sustainable way.
