"Creation"-an essential factor pushing up determination and development of Vietnam architecture

In the past, architecture under the republican democratic regime or socialist ones has determined images and homogeneity. However, in present renovation period the archiecture of Vietnam can not accept crumbled unprincipled images of contemporary architecture. So it is necessary to create new image imprinting evolution, stability and firmness to this period. In the market mechanism, architecture is considered simply as a product of goods but its value in the society is much larger and more important, especially when it contains ideology, art and represents talent and intelligence of a class of people, a society that affects natural and social environment.

"Success or failure" of Vietnam architecture is not due to the architect

In past years, Vietnam Association of Architects has gained many achievements. However, it lacks legal, decisive language in occupation, it does not uphold interests of members or architects (especially in local branches). The association and its branches are the gathering places of excellent architects but its right is not high. When legal corridor should be defined and rights should be applied to the association so it and its branches will be a house for the architects. Criticism and theory have been touched many times.

A hope for dawn

In past 5 years, construction has developed rapidly in the whole country but architectural arts have developed slowly and have not kept up with the tempo of country's construction. Formalism is heavy, French-style syndrome is reduced but not stopped. Some trends of creation have gained initial achievements. However, there is no a clear trend, architectural school or relatively stable style which can orient Vietnam architecture. Through many recent forums held in 3 regions: in the North, Centre and South can find many nice architectural buildings in different provinces and cities with different trends such as modern-new, modern-national and according to formalism, high-tech... as experiment. It means that there are facing changes. Quantity will turn into quality. Does it promise the dawn?

Architect, association of architects and Vietnam architecture

The association can find the talents through architectural awards which have been held every two years. Hence, this competition must attract the architects. Currently, the number of works participating in competition is few and some good designs are absent because they do not believe in justice in organization way. It is suitable for the association to manage professional activities of the architects so the association should be more active to realize this task in the new term.

Establishing a social relationship line of architecture to improve design quality of Vietnam contemporary architecture

Establishing a social relationship line of architecture: The relationship line with society of architecture is understanding between society and architecture in order to socialize, increase awareness of creators, improve knowledge of people and high-ranking officials as well as awareness of the society on architecture. This relationship is equal, voluntary without imposition, this line has established on the basis of common responsibility and spirit. More exactly, the relationship line of architecture with society is a spontaneous requirement of the architects in self-training on the one hand and social responsibilities of the architects in the other ones.

From the future to the present

In past years, in Vietnam the development of economy, culture, society, construction, urban areas has taken place but it is not strong enough to create impetus, to bring up trends and styles as well as to give birth famous architects but these initial steps of search and experiment are valuable. Coming back the present, Architecturally there are many urgent matters as follows: Lack of legal regulation and suitable practical environment for designing architectural works; Lack of professionalism in practice such as consultant level, grasp of science and advanced technology; Lack of architectural criticism and theory as basic foundation to light design works; Training architects is not meet quality requirements. Actual proposals: Establishing a centre for supporting architectural design; Compiling a book on Vietnam's architectural history.

Practising as an architect and new challenges

The first challenge is that many architects in practice wonder whether the society can evaluate exactly the role of architects. Practice shows that design of the architect in existing practical environment seems to be unselfconfident because of changeful criteria of orders. Professionally deep intervention as well as unexplained decisions of approvers make the architect ambarrassed. The professional committee of the Vietnam Association of Architects can not solve this issue for some works. The architect faces two ways, the first one is that they surrender to continue the work unappropriate to design criteria but can earn money for their living or they give up unreasonable taste of the client as well as their fond work despite of lack of money. The second challange, in practical environment of the architects apprear foreign architects. In common mind, the Vietnamese always gives priority to foreign consultant offices. Despite the fact that foreign goods can predominate over the intenal ones. The third challange, it is necessary to abolish backward preconceptions to form new architecture. The author call for the advanced architecture full of national characteristics.

Improving environment in inhabitant points d. Providing suitable accommodation for all persons e. Developing construction industry f. Preserving energy and intensifying energy effect in the inhabitant quarters Above-mentioned programs should be implemented through management activities, study of construction planning designs and consultancy of building construction.
