Discussion on the tube-house in Hanoi ancient quarter
-
Concerning Hanoi ancient quarter (area of 36 streets and guilds), many researchers have used the concept of the "tube-house" and all they admit that it is the specific feature of the ancient quarter. However, it only stops in form of discribing width, length, and layout of a ground plan. According to the newest survey of the research group on the HAIDEP programme implemented by JICA, Japan, in Hanoi the tube-house built in the traditional form is few in number, almost they have been changed. Some houses have been absolutely changed, some houses still keep a part facing the street but their inner parts were built upward to 3 or 5 storey, even 7 storey buildings. The risk of losing the traditional houses is possible. The traditional tube-house is a kind of the streethouse with 2.5-4.5m width. Its length is 9 or 10 times larger than the width. The house has 1 to 3 storeys and 2 or 3 courtyards.
Hence, the "tube-house" should be preserved in concrete space of Hanoi ancient quarter and only in this site it can express all respectable specific features.

Initial steps of the capital's planning
-
New stage for Hanoi planning began after the victory against French invaders in 1954. Passing some years of economic recovery, Hanoi started a new development era. Making planning of urban development was set up. Many socialist countries especially the former Soviet Union helped us in making planning of the city as well as training cadres to carry out this work. Looking back the initial steps of Hanoi's planning, can realize the process of urban rehabilitation, a context of receiving knowledge of a new and difficult scientific subject due to its synthesis and multi-branches. The work of urban planning was imigrated to Vietnam by this way. It is pleased that the succeeding generations of the first architects have developed this subject and gained new achievements of urban development.
